Scotland was a dream destination for me, a land of rugged beauty, ancient castles, and of course, the legendary Highland cows. This past fall, I finally made the journey, and it was every bit as magical as I'd hoped – perhaps even more so thanks to my furry new friends.
First Impressions: A Country of Contrasts
From the moment I stepped off the plane in Edinburgh, I was captivated. The city was a fascinating blend of historic architecture and modern energy. The Royal Mile, with its towering tenements and cobbled streets, transported me back in time, while the trendy shops and bustling pubs kept me firmly grounded in the present.
After a few days exploring the city's many attractions, we hoped on a train and headed north towards the Highlands. The scenery changed dramatically. Rolling hills gave way to towering mountains, dotted with sparkling lochs and shrouded in mist. It was truly breathtaking.
Meeting the Stars: The Majestic Highland Cows
Of course, no trip to Scotland would be complete without encountering the famous Highland cows, or "Heilan Coos" as they're affectionately known. I had seen countless photos of these majestic creatures, but nothing could prepare me for the experience of seeing them in person.
More than Cows: A Symbol of Scotland
As my trip progressed, I came to realize that Highland cows are more than just livestock; they are a symbol of Scotland itself. Their resilience, adaptability, and gentle nature reflect the spirit of the Scottish people. It's no wonder they are so beloved.
Leaving with a Heavy Heart (and a Lighter Suitcase)
My time in Scotland flew by, and before I knew it, it was time to head home. I left with a heavy heart but a lighter suitcase, having purchased a few too many souvenirs.
Scotland had exceeded all my expectations, and the Highland cows had stolen a piece of my heart. I know I'll be back someday to explore more of this beautiful country and to visit my shaggy friends once again.
Tips for Spotting Highland Cows:
Visit the Highlands: While you might get lucky and spot them elsewhere, the Highlands are the best place to see Highland cows in their natural habitat.
Drive Carefully: Keep an eye out for them on country roads, especially in rural areas.
Respect Their Space: Don't approach them too closely, and never feed them.
Take Plenty of Photos: You'll want to remember these majestic creatures long after you leave Scotland.
