Our first trip to London in May was a whirlwind of iconic sights and quintessential British experiences. But if there's one memory that stands out above the rest, it's our Beefeater tour of the Tower of London. It was a fascinating journey through centuries of history, brought to life by a colorful character with a knack for storytelling.

Beefeater

The Beefeater: More Than Just a Fancy Hat

Our guide, a Yeoman Warder (the official name for a Beefeater), was a retired military officer with a twinkle in his eye and a seemingly endless supply of anecdotes.  Dressed in the traditional blue and red uniform, he commanded attention from the moment we gathered in the courtyard.  But it wasn't just his attire that impressed us; it was his deep knowledge of the Tower's history and his ability to make the past come alive.

A Bloody and Bejeweled History

As we followed our Beefeater through the Tower's various buildings and courtyards, we were regaled with tales of royal intrigue, imprisonment, and execution. We learned about the Tower's role as a fortress, a palace, and a prison, and we heard stories of the famous figures who had walked (or been dragged) through its gates.

We stood on Tower Green, the site of many executions, including those of Anne Boleyn and Lady Jane Grey.  Our Beefeater recounted these events with a mix of solemnity and humor, painting a vivid picture of the drama that unfolded on this very spot.

We also marveled at the Crown Jewels, housed in the Jewel House.  The sparkling diamonds, rubies, and emeralds were a sight to behold, and our Beefeater's commentary added a layer of context and intrigue to the display.

More Than Just a Tour: An Experience

Our Beefeater tour was more than just a guided walk through a historical site. It was an immersive experience that transported us back in time. We laughed, we gasped, and we learned so much about this iconic landmark and its role in English history.

Tips for Your Beefeater Tour:

  • Arrive Early: The tours are included with your Tower of London admission and run every 30 minutes, but they can fill up quickly.

  • Stand Near the Front: This will ensure you have a good view of the Beefeater and can hear their stories clearly.

  • Ask Questions: The Beefeaters are a wealth of knowledge and are happy to answer any questions you have.

  • Take Photos: But be sure to ask the Beefeater first, as some areas of the Tower have restrictions on photography.

  • Enjoy the Moment:  The Beefeater tour is a unique opportunity to learn about history in a fun and engaging way.  Soak it all in!
